Security window film cannot make glass unbreakable or guarantee that an intruder will never get through. Its purpose is to hold broken glass together and make a quick breach more difficult. The result depends on the film, glass, frame, installation and whether the filmed pane is attached to the frame. Security film should therefore be treated as one layer in a broader security plan, alongside suitable locks, alarms, lighting, cameras and response procedures.

The glass may still crack or shatter. The difference is what happens next. The film keeps the broken fragments bonded together, leaving the attacker with a flexible sheet of filmed glass that takes more effort to displace and penetrate.

It should not be relied on as the only deterrent, but it can make a home or business a less attractive target.
How security window film delays forced entry
Untreated glass commonly fractures and falls away after impact. Once enough glass has left the opening, an intruder may be able to reach a lock, climb through or remove stock.
Security film is bonded to the glass with a strong adhesive. When the pane breaks, the fragments remain attached to the film rather than immediately falling apart. The attacker must continue striking, tearing and working through the filmed pane before an opening can be created.
That change from instant glass failure to a retained, flexible barrier is the main security benefit. It does not prevent the initial breakage. It makes the next stage more difficult, time-consuming and noisy.
The actual resistance of an installed system depends on:
- Film construction and tear resistance
- Film thickness
- Glass type and thickness
- Pane dimensions
- Condition and strength of the frame
- How securely the glass is held at its edges

- The tool, force, location and duration of the attack
This is why a responsible installer should assess the complete glazing system rather than recommend a film based only on thickness.
Film alone versus a frame attachment system
Window film bonds the broken pieces of glass together. However, the complete filmed pane is only as secure as its connection to the frame.
For lower-risk applications, film alone may provide an appropriate level of fragment retention and added resistance. For higher-risk shopfronts, entry doors and vulnerable ground-floor glazing, an attachment system may be recommended.
3M Impact Protection Attachment systems bond the filmed glass more securely to the surrounding frame. This helps the complete system remain in the opening after impact instead of allowing the filmed sheet to pull away at the edges.
Whether an attachment is necessary depends on the risk profile, frame construction, glass and required performance. It should be specified after inspection, not added automatically to every quotation.
Which type of security film is appropriate?
Security film is not one standard product. The right specification depends on whether the priority is accidental impact protection, fragment retention or resistance to forced entry.
3M Safety Series
3M Safety Series films are suitable where the main objective is holding broken glass together and reducing hazards from impact, accidents or lower-risk breakage.
They can also add resistance against opportunistic entry, but they are not the highest tear-resistant option in the 3M range.
3M Scotchshield Ultra S800
3M Scotchshield Ultra S800 is an 8 mil, micro-layered, tear-resistant security film. It is generally considered where forced entry resistance is a primary requirement, including street-facing retail, high-value premises and vulnerable entry glazing.
Ultra S800 is optically clear, so it can strengthen a shopfront without hiding displays or substantially changing the appearance of the glass.
Combined security and solar films
Some buildings need security together with solar heat, glare or daytime privacy control. Combined products such as 3M Ultra Prestige and Ultra Night Vision can provide security-film construction with additional solar performance.
The correct option depends on the glass and the problem being solved. A darker or more reflective product should not be selected for security alone if it changes the building appearance unnecessarily.
Six Six Store: 3M Ultra S800 on a Melbourne CBD shopfront
Six Six Store is an eyewear and optometry retailer with street-facing shopfront glazing in Melbourne CBD. UV Window Coatings installed clear 3M Ultra S800 security film across the shopfront. The filmed glazing was then connected to the surrounding frame using DOWSIL structural caulking as the perimeter attachment.
The 3M film and DOWSIL attachment were separate components of the installed system. Together, they provided a tear-resistant film layer with improved retention at the frame while preserving the clear presentation of the store and its displays. From the street, the completed glazing remains visually open rather than appearing barred, screened or heavily tinted.
The completion photograph shows the finished appearance of the installation. It should not be treated as evidence of a measured forced-entry delay. Security performance comes from the specified film, glass, frame and installation system, not from how the completed glass looks in a photograph.

Where security film is most useful
Security film can be considered anywhere accessible glass creates a vulnerable entry point or injury risk.
Common applications include:
- Retail shopfronts and display windows
- Pharmacies, optometrists and other premises holding valuable stock
- Ground-floor office windows and glazed entry doors
- Homes with large sliding doors or street-facing glass
- Apartment entry glazing and shared lobbies
- Schools, healthcare facilities and public buildings

The highest priority is normally glass that is accessible from the street, concealed from view, close to a door lock or large enough to create an easy entry opening once broken.
How long can security film delay an intruder?
There is no honest universal answer.
Laboratory tests use defined glass, framing, attachment systems, tools and impact sequences. Real attacks vary. An intruder may use a different tool, strike another part of the opening or attack the frame instead of the glass.
For that reason, avoid any installer promising that a film will always hold for a particular number of minutes. A tested system can have documented performance under its test conditions, but that is not a guarantee for every building or attack.
The practical objective is to make entry noisy, difficult and time-consuming enough that the attacker gives up or a security response begins before access is achieved.
Is security film worth it for a home?
It can be worthwhile when a home has accessible glazing that would otherwise provide quick access to a handle, lock or large opening.

- Glass beside a front door lock
- Large sliding doors at the rear of the property
- Ground-floor bedroom windows
- Secluded side windows hidden from neighbours
- Homes containing high-value items or requiring additional occupant protection
Security film works best as part of layered protection. Good locks, monitored alarms, sensor lighting and cameras remain important because the film is designed to delay entry rather than guarantee prevention.
Is security film worth it for a business?
For retailers and commercial premises, even a short delay can be valuable. Smash-and-grab attacks depend on speed. The offender wants the glass to fail immediately, take stock and leave before anyone can respond.
Film can make that rapid entry more difficult while retaining the clear appearance of a customer-facing shopfront. Businesses should also consider the value and location of stock, trading hours, alarm response, insurer requirements and whether the frame needs an attachment system.

Is security window film bulletproof?
No. 3M states that its safety and security window films are not bulletproof. They are intended to hold broken glass together and help delay forced entry.
Ultra S800 also has blast-mitigation applications in appropriate commercial and non-educational government settings when specified as part of a tested glazing and attachment system. In that role, the objective is to retain broken glass and reduce hazards from flying fragments during a blast event. Blast mitigation does not make the glazing explosion-proof, bulletproof or impossible to breach.
