At this Rowville family home, the brief was broader than reducing summer heat. The homeowners wanted to improve the year-round performance of their existing windows while also gaining more daytime privacy. That made 3M All Season LE35 a better fit for the brief than a conventional clear solar-control film. LE35 is part of 3M's All Season Low-E range, combining solar control for warmer conditions with Low-E insulating performance designed to improve the thermal performance of existing glazing in cooler conditions.
Melbourne windows have a summer and winter problem
Solar heat entering through glass can make a home uncomfortable during warmer weather, particularly where windows receive significant sun. During colder weather, the challenge changes. Windows can also be a significant pathway for heat loss from the interior of a home. For this Rowville property, the owners wanted a film that addressed more than one season. They also wanted greater daytime privacy, making the darker appearance of LE35 an advantage rather than a compromise.
Why we recommended 3M All Season LE35
We recommended 3M All Season LE35 because the priorities on this project aligned with the strengths of a Low-E window film. In warmer conditions, the film provides solar-control performance to reduce solar heat gain through the glazing. In cooler conditions, its Low-E properties are designed to improve the insulating performance of the existing windows and reduce radiant heat loss through the glass. LE35 also has a noticeably darker appearance than very clear films such as Prestige 70. For this household, that was useful because increased daytime privacy was one of the project requirements.
What Low-E window film can and cannot do
Low-E film is designed to improve the thermal performance of existing glazing, but it does not turn single glazing into double glazing. Double glazing and window film work differently. Replacement insulated glass units use multiple panes separated by a sealed cavity. Low-E window film is applied to existing glazing and modifies the way solar and radiant energy interact with the window. For homes where complete window replacement is not required or practical, Low-E film can provide a retrofit option for improving the performance of existing glass. The appropriate solution still depends on the existing glass, glazing configuration, orientation and the homeowner's objectives.
Daytime privacy was part of the brief
The darker appearance of LE35 also provides greater daytime privacy than a very clear solar-control film. As with other reflective privacy films, the effect depends on relative light levels. Privacy is strongest when it is brighter outside than inside. At night, when interior lights are on and it is darker outside, the privacy relationship can reverse. For this project, the combination of thermal performance and increased daytime privacy made LE35 particularly well suited to the brief.
Installation at the Rowville home
UV Window Coatings installed LE35 to the selected glazing throughout the family home. The project photographs show both the interior and exterior appearance of the completed glazing. From inside, useful outward views remain through the treated windows. Externally, the film gives the glass a darker appearance than a high-transmission clear film such as Prestige 70. For these homeowners, that appearance aligned with the privacy objective rather than working against it.

Is All Season film right for your home?
