Privacy was the priority at this Toorak residence. Several windows face the street, leaving the interior of the home more visible from outside during the day than the owners wanted. The challenge was to increase privacy without permanently obscuring the glass. The homeowners still wanted to be able to see outside and retain natural light, which made an opaque or fully frosted treatment less suitable for the brief. The challenge: privacy without losing the outlook
There are several ways to create privacy through residential glazing, but they do not all produce the same result. Frosted film is highly effective when permanent obscuration is required, but it also restricts the view through the treated area. For these street-facing windows, the owners wanted a different balance. Daytime privacy was paramount, but maintaining useful outward views was also important. That pointed us towards a solar-control film with a stronger daytime privacy effect rather than an opaque decorative film.
Why we recommended 3M Night Vision 25
3M Night Vision 25 was selected because its darker appearance and exterior reflectivity can make it more difficult to see into a home during suitable daytime lighting conditions while still allowing the occupants to see outside. That made it a better match for this particular brief than a clear solar film or a fully frosted treatment. Night Vision 25 also provides solar heat and glare reduction, but those were secondary benefits on this project. The primary reason for choosing the film was daytime privacy.
What Night Vision 25 does and does not do
Reflective privacy film works because of the difference in light levels on either side of the glass. During the day, when it is brighter outside than inside, Night Vision 25 can significantly reduce visibility into the home while maintaining an outward view. That relationship changes after dark. When the interior is illuminated and it is darker outside, people outside may be able to see into the home. Night Vision 25 should therefore not be described as one-way glass or as providing guaranteed night-time privacy. Where privacy is required regardless of lighting conditions, frosted or other obscuring films may be more appropriate.

For 3M Night Vision 25 installed on 6 mm clear single-pane reference glass, the verified manufacturer performance figures are:
- 24% visible light transmission
- 63% total solar energy rejected
- 52% solar heat reduction
- 73% glare reduction
- 99.9% UV rejection
These are manufacturer ratings for the stated reference-glass configuration. They are not measurements taken at this Toorak residence. Actual performance varies with glass type, glazing configuration and environmental conditions.
The completed appearance
The project photographs show the two sides of the privacy equation. From the street, the treated glazing presents a darker and more reflective appearance that increases daytime privacy. From inside, the occupants retain a useful view through the treated windows. That balance was the reason Night Vision 25 suited this project: the owners could improve privacy from the street without permanently obscuring their outlook.
Choosing privacy film for a Melbourne home
Privacy film selection depends heavily on what you need the glass to do. If you want permanent privacy regardless of lighting conditions, a frosted film may be the better solution.
