Low-E, all-season, insulation or reflective solar film, what's the difference?
All four terms describe insulating window films that reduce heat transfer through glass, the difference is which side of the glass the heat is on.
- Low-E (low-emissivity) film — the technical name. A microscopically thin metallic layer reflects long-wave infrared (radiant heat) back to its source.
- Window insulation film — the everyday name. Same product, marketed for energy efficiency and lower bills.
- All-Season Window Film — our name for it, because the same Low-E coating keeps indoor heat inside during the cold months and reflects solar heat away in summer.
- Reflective solar film — the same insulating principle pointed at the sun, reflecting solar heat away from the building in summer. Some films do both, some specialise.
