The usual fixes — permanently closed blinds, heavy curtains, replacing the glass with obscure glazing — either cost thousands or turn a window into a wall.

    Privacy window film solves the same problem in a single visit, on the glass you already have. A thin film is applied to the inside face of the pane, custom cut to the opening, and squeegeed down so it reads as part of the glass rather than something stuck to it. Depending on which family of film you choose, you either keep your view out and lose the view in, or you diffuse the glass entirely so nobody sees anything from either side at any hour.

    Bathrooms and ensuites

    Choose frosted film. You need privacy at 7am and at 10pm, in both directions, and you are not sacrificing much by losing the view out of a bathroom window. Frosted film keeps the room bright while making shapes and detail unreadable from outside. It is the single most requested privacy film we install in Melbourne homes.

    Choose one-way reflective film. It blocks the daytime view in from the footpath while you keep your outlook and your natural light — the thing frosted film cannot do in a living space. It also cuts solar heat and glare on north and west-facing glass. Remember the night-time reversal: with lights on after dark you will still want a blind or sheer.

    Offices, meeting rooms and clinics

    Choose frosted or patterned film internally, reflective film on the façade. Frosted bands at seated eye height give confidentiality in a boardroom without closing the fit-out in, and full-height glass needs manifestation under AS 1288 anyway so the band does two jobs at once.

    The three privacy films, explained

    Reflective window film (one-way mirror)

    Reflective window film — also called one-way mirror film or one-way reflective film — carries a metallised or ceramic layer that bounces light back off the brighter side of the glass. During daylight hours the outside is brighter, so the window reads as a mirror from the street while you look out normally from inside. Because it is working on light rather than opacity, it is the only privacy option that preserves your view — which is why it belongs on living rooms, home offices and any window with an outlook worth keeping.

    Reflective films also reject a serious amount of solar heat, so a west-facing lounge that gets privacy also gets a cooler afternoon. The trade-off is the night-time reversal: once your interior lights are the brighter source, the mirror flips and you become visible. Plan for a sheer or blind on rooms you use after dark, or step up to frosted film if 24-hour privacy matters more than the view.

    Frosted film

    Frosted film gives the appearance of acid-etched or sandblasted glass. Light still passes through, but it is scattered, so shapes beyond about half a metre from the pane become unreadable. It works identically at midday and at midnight because it does not depend on which side is brighter — which makes it the correct answer for bathrooms, ensuites, toilets, front-door sidelights and any office glass that needs to stay private around the clock.

    Frosted film is also the base of most decorative work: bands, dot-fades, cut-out logos, gradients and full-height patterns are all frosted film plotted to a design.     Blackout film

    Blackout film is fully opaque. No light passes through the glass, nobody sees in or out at any hour, and solar heat gain through the pane drops by up to around 80%. It is the right film when darkness is the point rather than a side effect: home cinemas, shift-worker bedrooms, photography studios, server rooms, and vacant or back-of-house shopfront glass.
