Professional window tinting installation usually takes a single day for residential jobs and 1–3 days for commercial. The installer cleans the glass to a microscopic standard, cuts the film to size, bonds it with a slip-solution, squeegees out all the water and air, and trims to the frame edge. This FAQ walks you through every step so you know exactly what to expect.
Step 1: Site measure and product specification
Before installation we measure every window, identify the glass type (single, double-glazed, Low-E, toughened, laminated), and check orientation, shading and HVAC behaviour. The right film for a west-facing single-glazed living room is different to the right film for a north-facing IGU. This step is free in Melbourne metro.
Step 2: Quote and product confirmation
You receive a fixed written quote with the exact film, m² and warranty stated. We answer questions, confirm a date, and order the film ready for the install day. Most residential installs are booked within 1–2 weeks of quote acceptance.
Step 3: Glass preparation (the most important step)
On install day, every window is cleaned twice, first with a soap-and-water solution to lift dust and oils, then razored with a sharp plastic blade to remove paint, silicone or window-cleaner residue. Any contaminant left on the glass shows up forever under the film, so we take longer on prep than most homeowners expect.
Step 4: Cutting and shaping the film
The film is rolled out onto the glass exterior, sprayed with slip-solution, then cut to size using a plastic guide that protects the adhesive. For shaped or arched windows we make a paper template first.
Step 5: Applying the film to the glass
- Glass is sprayed with slip-solution (water + a drop of baby shampoo)
- Film liner is peeled and the adhesive face is sprayed
- Film is positioned on the inside face of the glass. The slip-solution lets us slide it into place
- A hard squeegee removes water and air from the centre outward
- Edges are trimmed flush to the frame with a sharp plastic blade
Step 6: Final inspection and clean-up
Every window is inspected for trapped air, debris and edge gaps. Floors are protected throughout, and we vacuum and wipe down on the way out. You should not be able to tell we were there, except that the glass now performs differently.
Step 7: Cure time and aftercare
Window film takes 7–30 days to fully cure depending on the season and sun exposure. During this period it's normal to see small water pockets or a slightly hazy look, these disappear as the slip-solution evaporates through the film. Don't clean the windows or touch the inside face during this time.

An average residential home (15–25m²) is completed in one day. A small office or shopfront is usually 1–2 days. Large commercial projects (200m²+) are scheduled across 3–10 days, often after hours to avoid disrupting trade.
Do I need to move furniture?
We move what we can ourselves. We ask homeowners to clear the windowsills and pull curtains/blinds back the night before. Heavy furniture against a window only needs to be moved out by about 1 metre.

Is window tint applied to the inside or outside of the glass?+
Architectural window film is always applied to the inside face of the glass. This protects the film from the weather and means it lasts 15–25 years on residential glazing.
How long after installation can I clean the windows?+

Will I see water pockets after installation?+
Yes. Small water pockets, light haze or a slight blue tint are normal during the 7–30 day cure period. They disappear as the slip-solution evaporates through the film. This is not a defect.
Do I need to be home during installation?+
For residential jobs, someone should be home at the start to let installers in and at the end for the walk-through. You don't need to stay during the install itself. Commercial sites are usually keyed access or after-hours.
Will installation damage my window frames?+
