    Office glare can make screens difficult to read, create uncomfortable working conditions and leave staff constantly adjusting blinds throughout the day. Direct sunlight is an obvious source, but it is not the only one. Reflections from nearby buildings, parked vehicles and passing traffic can produce sudden bursts of glare even when the sun is not shining directly through the glass.

    Why office glare is difficult to manage

    Window film treats the glass itself. It can reduce visible light and glare across the affected elevation while allowing the office to retain a controlled level of natural light.

    Selecting window film for office glare

    The darkest film is not automatically the best choice. Film selection should consider:

    • The severity and timing of the glare
    • Glass orientation
    • Existing visible light levels
    • Screen and workstation positions
    • Glass type and thermal stress compatibility
    • Desired appearance from outside
    • Existing film elsewhere in the building
    • Whether internal or external installation is appropriate

    Visible Light Transmission, or VLT, indicates how much visible light passes through the filmed glass. A lower VLT generally provides greater glare relief, but it also creates a darker appearance.

    This is why samples and an on-site assessment are important. The objective is to control the glare without making the workplace unnecessarily dark or creating a visibly mismatched facade.

    The problem

    WorkSafe Victoria's office was experiencing intense glare from direct sunlight and reflections from vehicles moving through the adjoining car park.

    The changing reflections created uncomfortable working conditions for staff throughout the day. The project also presented an aesthetic challenge: the new film needed to match window film already installed elsewhere in the building.

    A product that controlled glare but looked noticeably different from the existing installation would have left the elevation inconsistent.

    The assessment

    Our Product Specialist, Deborah, assessed the glass and existing film on site.

    With more than 25 years of window film experience, Deborah compared the appearance of the existing installation and considered the glare conditions affecting the office. She recommended Solar Gard Sentinel Plus Stainless Steel 15 for the new work.

    The product was specified for external application across 140 panes.

    The assessment focused on two outcomes:

    • Reducing the glare affecting staff inside the office
    • Matching the appearance of the existing film across the building

    This type of matching work requires more than selecting a film with a similar product description. Colour, reflectivity and visible light transmission can look different once installed on the building's actual glass.

    The installation

    Solar Gard Sentinel Plus Stainless Steel 15 was installed externally across 140 individual panes.

    Treating the complete nominated area created a consistent finish across the elevation. The large number of separate panes also required careful installation to maintain uniform alignment and appearance.

    The result

    The completed installation delivered meaningful glare reduction and improved comfort inside the office.

    From outside, the new film blends with the existing installation rather than appearing as a separate or mismatched section of glazing. The result addresses the practical workplace problem while maintaining a consistent facade.

    What facility managers can learn from this project

    Diagnose the actual glare source

    Direct sunlight may be only part of the problem. Reflections from vehicles and surrounding buildings can change quickly and affect areas that appear shaded during an initial inspection.

    Assessing the building at the relevant time of day helps identify what staff are actually experiencing.

    Compare samples on the building

    Product names and data sheets do not show exactly how a film will look on a particular pane of glass. Existing glass colour, coatings, lighting and surrounding materials all influence the finished appearance.

    Where new film must match an existing installation, samples should be assessed against the actual building.

    Balance glare reduction with natural light

    A very dark film may reduce glare effectively but create a workspace that feels unnecessarily enclosed. The correct specification balances glare relief with usable daylight, appearance and the needs of staff.

    Consider the whole elevation

    Treating isolated panes can produce an uneven facade. For larger commercial projects, the visual effect across the complete elevation should form part of the product assessment.

    Confirm glass compatibility

    Not every film is suitable for every glass configuration. Glass type, coatings, pane thickness and exposure should be assessed before specifying an internal or external product.
