    NanoShield vs Window Film: Which Is Better for Your Windows?

    NanoShield Cosy 24/7 and architectural window film can both reduce solar heat and ultraviolet radiation while retaining natural light, but they are different technologies. NanoShield is a clear liquid coating with a fixed performance profile. Window film is a factory manufactured polyester layer available in clear, tinted, reflective, Low E, privacy and safety products.

    On the published figures, NanoShield performs similarly to the clearest solar films. Window film provides more choice when stronger solar control, glare reduction, privacy, winter insulation or glass retention is required.

    What is NanoShield Cosy 24/7?

    NanoShield describes Cosy 24/7 as a liquid nanotechnology coating. It is normally applied to the internal glass with a roller and cures as a layer approximately 8 to 10 microns thick.

    Its public performance sheet reports the following results for a 2.8 mm glazing sample:

    These results support a very clear, low reflection coating with moderate solar control. The insulation figures require separate consideration below.

    What is architectural window film?

    Architectural window film is a factory manufactured laminate bonded to existing glass. Products are designed for different objectives, including:

    • Clear solar control
    • Stronger heat and glare reduction
    • Daytime privacy
    • Frosted or decorative privacy
    • Low E winter insulation
    • Safety and security
    • Anti graffiti surface protection

    This range is the central difference. NanoShield is one clear coating, while film is a category selected according to the glass and required outcome.

    Which keeps more natural light?

    NanoShield publishes 78.2% visible light transmission on its tested sample. Its FAQ gives 87% for the untreated glass, a reduction of approximately nine percentage points.

    NanoShield and ULR 80 are almost identical for VLT and TSER, with Ceramic 80 also close. 3M Prestige 70 admits less natural light but provides stronger solar control. On 6 mm clear single pane glass, 3M publishes 50% TSER at normal incidence, rising to 59% at a 60° incidence angle. NanoShield does not publish an equivalent angled result in the reviewed data, so the products cannot be compared at the same angle.

    NanoShield claims higher VLT than any heat control tint, but ULR 80 also publishes approximately 78%. Samples on the customer's glass remain more useful for judging appearance.

    Which provides better summer heat reduction?

    NanoShield publishes an SHGC of 0.583, which gives a calculated TSER of 41.7%. Its shading coefficient of 0.670 indicates approximately 33% less solar heat gain than the reference clear glazing used for that calculation. These figures measure different things.

    NanoShield's “up to 42%” solar heat claim appears to reflect TSER. It should not be read as a measured 42% improvement over a customer's existing window.

    ULR 80 and Ceramic 80 provide similar normal incidence TSER. Prestige 70 publishes 50% TSER normally and 59% at a 60° incidence angle on 6 mm clear single pane glass. The 59% figure is angle specific, not universal heat rejection.

    Where reducing heat matters more than retaining 77% to 78% VLT, darker or reflective solar window films can provide stronger performance, with a more noticeable change in light or appearance.

    Does NanoShield provide winter insulation?

    NanoShield describes Cosy 24/7 as a radiant heat barrier. Its report gives front and back emissivity of 0.845 and 0.883 and a winter U-value of 6.05 W/m²K. Lower emissivity and U-value indicate better winter insulation, and these published results do not demonstrate substantial Low E performance.

    The report also provides no untreated control U-value, so a percentage improvement cannot be calculated from it. This does not prove that customers experience no difference, but it does not substantiate double glazing performance or a quantified heating energy reduction.

    For winter heat retention, compare NanoShield with purpose designed Low E window film using figures for the actual glass configuration.

    What about infrared rejection?

    NanoShield claims more than 70% infrared rejection. Some films publish higher figures, but manufacturers may use different wavelength ranges. Infrared rejection is not total heat rejection and should not be compared directly with TSER, SHGC or room temperature.

    For summer performance, compare the complete glazing system's SHGC or TSER together with VLT. TSER is commonly used because many manufacturers do not publish a separate solar heat reduction figure. Our guide to window film performance numbers explains the difference.

    Which is better for UV and fading protection?

    NanoShield claims more than 99.7% UV rejection. Quality architectural films commonly reject at least 99%, with many 3M products publishing 99.9%.

    Both can provide strong UV protection, but neither stops all fading. Visible light, heat, material chemistry, humidity and age also contribute. Our fading protection guide explains these factors.

    Which provides better privacy and glare control?

    NanoShield is designed to remain clear, so it provides limited glare reduction and no meaningful visual privacy. The clearest films have the same limitation. Darker film can provide stronger glare control and daytime privacy, while frosting obscures views during both day and night. See our privacy window film options.

    Does either option make glass safer?

    NanoShield publishes no glass retention or impact protection function. Ordinary solar film is not safety film either. Purpose designed safety and security film systems can help retain broken glass, with structural attachment available for relevant security risks.

    Installation, seams and unusual glass shapes

    NanoShield is roller applied, becomes touch dry in one to two hours and fully cures in about one week under its stated conditions. Its liquid form may suit unusually shaped or curved glass.

    Window film is cut from rolls. Most panes can be covered in one piece, although very large panes may require a seam. Film can also be removed and replaced when requirements change. The removal method for a cured coating should be confirmed before installation, particularly in rented or owners corporation controlled property.

    Neither option suits every pane. Glass type, coatings, seals, laminated construction, double glazing and thermal stress must be assessed first.

    Warranty and published pricing

    Residential window films are available with manufacturer coverage of up to a limited lifetime warranty for as long as the original owner owns the property. The exact term depends on the film, glass and application. Commercial and external film warranties are generally different. Compare what is covered, whether labour is included and whether the warranty transfers, rather than relying on duration alone.

    Which should you choose?

    NanoShield is a credible option for a clear, low reflection coating with moderate solar control. Its published solar performance is broadly comparable with ULR 80 and Ceramic 80.

    Window film is the stronger category when the customer needs greater solar or glare control, daytime or frosted privacy, Low E insulation, glass retention, forced entry delay, surface protection or a removable product.

    The choice is not between a clear coating and old dark tint. Modern clear films transmit approximately 69% to 78% of visible light while offering different performance, functions and warranties.

    NanoShield's test used a 2.8 mm sample, while the film figures above generally use 6 mm clear glass. Performance changes with thickness, tint, coatings, laminated construction and double glazing.

    NanoShield claims it can suppress condensation, but its public report contains no controlled condensation test or quantified before and after surface temperature. Condensation also depends on glass temperature, humidity, ventilation and outdoor conditions.

    Does NanoShield stop fading?+

    Both can provide strong UV protection and slow fading. Neither stops it completely because visible light, heat and other factors also contribute.

    Can NanoShield provide privacy?+

    Cosy 24/7 remains clear and provides no meaningful visual privacy. Film is available in reflective, tinted, frosted and opaque options.
