Window tinting prices in Australia vary more than most people expect, and most quotes are confusing because no two installers price the same way. This guide explains what actually drives the difference between a $1,500 job and a $5,000 one (both inc GST), and how to compare quotes properly.
What you can expect to pay
In Melbourne, professionally installed film runs roughly $85–$285 per square metre inc GST depending on grade, with a typical 3-bedroom home landing between $1,800 and $4,500 inc GST. Our pricing page carries the complete, current breakdown — every film, tier ranges, the $440 minimum job fee and what's always included.
What actually drives the price
1. The film itself
Premium 3M ceramic and Prestige films cost roughly two to three times more than entry-level solar films, but they reject more heat, block more UV, stay clearer, and come with much longer warranties (15 years to lifetime versus 1–7 years for budget films). Over the lifetime of the film, the premium option is usually cheaper per year.
2. Glass access and difficulty
Ground-floor windows you can walk up to are quick. Stairwell glass, second-storey windows that need ladder work, scaffolding or EWP, curved glass and skylights take longer and add to the cost.
3. Pane size and number
Lots of small panes (like a French door) take longer to cut and install than the same area of one big window — more cuts, more edges. Expect a small premium for highly subdivided glass, and a better $/m² rate on bigger jobs.
4. Removal of old film
If your existing tint is bubbling or peeling, stripping it can add $20–$45 per m² inc GST before the new install. Worth getting an honest quote that itemises this.
What should be included in a proper quote
- Brand and exact product code of the film (not just "premium ceramic")
- Square-metre price plus total fitted price — no surprise call-out fees
- Manufacturer warranty length and what's covered (3M residential is 15 years to lifetime)
- Installer's own workmanship warranty and public liability cover ($20M is standard for 3M Select Platinum)
- WFAANZ membership or equivalent industry accreditation
- Whether GST is included
Cheapest isn't usually cheapest
A bargain $40–$70/m² (inc GST) job using unbranded film often fades, purples, or bubbles inside 2–4 years — and there's no meaningful warranty to fall back on. The real cost is removing it and starting again. Buying once with a recognised brand and a 3M Select Platinum installer almost always works out cheaper over a 10-year view.
